Guatemalan human rights activist Rigoberta Menchú Tum and Mexican politician Victor Gonzalez Torres were awarded the Gandhi-Mandela Award. Tum was awarded for her significant contribution to human rights and Torres for his significant contribution to the health sector.
Tum has received several international awards for her work towards indigenous peoples’ rights and ethno-cultural reconciliation. She also received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 and the Princess of Asturias Prize in 1998.
The Gandhi-Mandela Foundation said in a statement that Tum’s work will continue to inspire and lead the fight for indigenous rights globally. The Gandhi Mandela Foundation, headed by Swami Avdheshanand Giri, is a non-profit organization. It has been formed to promote the values of non-violence adopted by Mahatma Gandhi and former South African President Nelson Mandela.
