New Delhi. Team India opener Shubman Gill thrashed Bangladesh bowlers in the second innings of the Chennai Test. He especially targeted the spinners. Gill, who was dismissed cheaply in the first innings, scored a brilliant century in the second innings. After the day’s play was over, Gill said that he adopted the old style of using his feet to blunt the edge of Bangladesh spinners. Gill further said that this was part of his strategy to deal with slow bowlers.

Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten 119 runs. With this, India declared its second innings at 287 runs for 4 wickets on Saturday and set an impossible target of 515 runs in front of Bangladesh in the first Test. Gill said in a press conference after the end of the third day’s play, ‘Earlier when I used to practice, I used to play forward using my feet, especially against spinners. I adopted the same strategy here because it was not easy for a spinner to get rhythm on such a wicket because the ball was turning only occasionally.’

Gill used this strategy against off-spinner Mehdi Hasan Miraz when he stepped forward and hit a six. After this, he did the same against Shakib Al Hasan. The Indian batsman said that he used to practice using his feet against spinners since his youth and with time he kept improving his skills. He said, ‘I have been practicing this since I was very young. I am tall and so it is easy for me to use my feet. Earlier I was not able to hit long shots but with time I learned to do so. Certainly, scoring runs against any opposing team increases your confidence and I am working on it now. So scoring runs here gave a lot of satisfaction. I had practiced a lot before this series.’

Gill had also scored two centuries against England earlier this year and said that it gave him a lot of confidence. Team India’s Prince said, ‘I believe that the series against England gave me a lot of confidence. It was very disappointing to get out early in the first innings here. But I am happy that I was able to spend enough time at the crease in the second innings.’ Gill also praised another century-scorer Rishabh Pant, who is playing his first Test match after being injured in a road accident in 2022. Gill said, ‘I spent a lot of time with him on and off the field. He scored a century on his return, which made me very happy. I have seen how hard he has worked after recovering from injury and I am sure he must be feeling good too.’
