Geological Survey Of India Report On Joshimath Land Subsidence ANN

Uttarakhand News: Geological Survey of India has submitted the report of Joshimath land subsidence case of Chamoli district to the Center as well as the State Government. There is a stir in the Uttarakhand government after the report came out. After the GSI report, there is a possibility of closure of many big projects in Uttarakhand. It has been recommended to avoid activities like road widening in Joshimath and Auli hills. GSI report contains warning on construction work in Joshimath and Auli. Disaster Management Secretary Ranjit Singh said that the government has received the report. The GSI report is being studied.

Danger looms on big project in Uttarakhand

GSI’s recommendation will be discussed by calling a meeting of officials. He confirmed that he has been asked not to do construction work in Joshimath and Auli. Further action will be taken after taking appropriate decision in the meeting. After studying the report, further action can be taken. Last year, in January 2023, cases of land subsidence were reported. 65 percent of the houses in Joshimath were damaged. Along with the Uttarakhand government, the Center had also expressed concern over the disaster. Top scientific agencies of the Center and the State were given the responsibility of studying the problem and causes of Joshimath landslide. Now there is a stir after the scientific report of Joshimath landslide came out.

What does the report of Joshimath landslide say?

The cause of the disaster has been attributed to poor infrastructure and drainage problems. According to the Geological Survey of India, the cracks in the fragile mountain were not caused by NTPC’s hydropower project. Measures to prevent disaster have also been suggested in the GSI report. People opposing the hydropower project and environmental activists had blamed the tunnel for the massive collapse that occurred between January 2 and January 8 last year.

Increased challenge of reconstruction of Joshimath

The evaluation report of the state government prepared by experts came in September. The report said that out of 2152 houses in the township, 1403 were affected. 472 houses will be rebuilt as per the principle of ‘Build Back Better’. 931 houses were to be repaired or retrofitted but the local people of Joshimath are still not ready to give up their land and houses. The government is busy convincing the people. At present, the reconstruction of Joshimath may be in trouble after the report. The impact of the report can also be seen on many projects of Uttarakhand.
