Steps are being taken by the nature conservation authorities to control and protect the related problem. Traffic and control measures are also being considered for the conservation and protection of local natural life.

Due to the environment in the Gandhi Sagar area, various types of animals are living comfortably. Surveys and data are confirming this. It has special importance due to its natural structure, climate, and suitability for wildlife. Species like butterflies, crocodiles, and vultures are residing here which are suitable for the environment. Special attention is being paid to the conservation and management of the natural resources here so that these species of natural life can be preserved.

Wildlife is getting a safe home

After the construction of Gandhi Sagar Dam, the Madhya Pradesh government declared this area as a wildlife sanctuary of 368 square kilometers on 28 February 1984. This sanctuary is working to create a safe place for wildlife. Four species of vultures are found in Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary and along with this three species migrate to use this sanctuary during winter. In the vulture census here, after Panna in Madhya Pradesh, it was in second place due to having about 700 vultures.

Tracking with caller ID

Gujarati vultures liked the climate of Gandhi Sagar and some time ago, according to officials from Gujarat, these vultures had reached Gandhi Sagar from Gir forests after covering a distance of about 800 km. Collar IDs were put on the vultures’ leashes in Gir forests so that the forest department could track them. The forest department got information about the vultures breeding and after this, the work of searching for those vultures was started which revealed that these vultures have settled in Gandhi Sagar.

It is also home to 246 species of birds

According to the forest department, 246 species of birds have been found so far during the survey in Gandhi Sagar. About 80 participants and bird experts collected this data by travelling on 23 routes for 3 days. The data obtained has been analysed by wildlife and nature conservation organisation “WNC Wildlife and Nature Conservation” Indore. Experts believe that the sanctuary area is suitable for the habitat and living conditions of birds, and the discovery of species indicates that signs of their life are present there.

The number of animals is increasing

Some time ago, butterfly experts from across the country launched a campaign to declare a national butterfly for butterfly conservation. In this campaign, 7 butterflies were selected from the species found in the country on the basis of an online survey. Three butterflies were liked the most, including the Common Jezebel species butterfly found in Gandhi Sagar. Along with this, Orange Oakleaf and Krishna Peacock were included in the top three.

Gandhi Sagar Dam is also favorable for aquatic species. In the last few years, the number of crocodiles has also increased here. Currently, there are more than 5 thousand crocodiles present in the reservoir.
