A major change in the legal system in the country has come into effect from July 1, i.e. today. From today, the three main criminal laws – the Indian Penal Code, 1860, the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 and the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 – will no longer be applicable. In their place, the Indian Justice Code, 2023, the Indian Evidence Act, 2023 and the Indian Civil Protection Code, 2023 have come into force.

Three new laws were passed in Parliament in December last year. The new laws have now come into effect across the country, replacing the three main criminal laws that were in place since the British era. In view of the increasing interference of technology in our lives, these laws also emphasize on maximum use of technology. Provisions have been made in these laws to digitize most of the legal processes. The government had also mentioned these things during the discussion in Parliament.

Let us know what are the three new criminal laws? How are the new laws linked to technology? How has the new legal system been digitalized?
