Varanasi News: Kashi Hindu University is called the capital of all knowledge. Hindu University has always been at the center culturally, socially and politically. The student protests in the university have shaken the foundation of even power. Presently, the students of Kashi Hindu University are protesting against the molestation of an IIT student and also protesting against the partition. Dr. Kaushal Kishore Mishra has been the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences in Banaras Hindu University. He said that many demonstrations held in the university for political, social and cultural heritage have directly challenged even the government. He told that Madan Mohan Malviya had laid the foundation stone of the university.

BHU has been witness to the students’ movement

A glimpse of India’s cultural heritage can also be seen in BHU. In 1965, the then Education Minister Mohammad Karim had introduced a bill in the Parliament. In the legislation, there was a proposal to remove the word Hindu from Kashi Hindu University. The argument was that the word Hindu in an institution like a university reflects communalism. The students became very aggressive in protesting against the removal of the word Hindu. They demonstrated and demanded withdrawal of the bill. At that time the demonstration was led by Rambachan Pandey, president of the student union on the campus.

The echo of protest has reached the government

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Rashtriya Jan Sangh participated in the demonstration. Apart from this, Atal Bihari Vajpayee had also opposed the proposal. Dr. Kaushal told that in the 60s, there was a movement going on across the country to stop the public use of English language. The pioneer of the movement was Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia. Students of Kashi Hindu University also staged a big demonstration on the issue. The protests continued on campus for a month. Devvrat Majumdar was leading the demonstration in the university.

The movement has been associated with it for a long time

Dr Kaushal told that in 1989, there was anger among students across the country against Mandal Commission and reservation. Students in Kashi Hindu University were also very angry. For several days, students had staged a huge demonstration in Banaras including the campus. Four students also died during the protest in Kashi Hindu University. Teachers union president Harikesh Singh was leading the demonstration. He told that the Ram Janmabhoomi movement was at its peak in 1991.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad of Kashi Hindu University and other student organizations also jumped in support of the movement. Students raised their voice for the construction of Ram temple. The then government had issued an order banning the student union elections in Kashi Hindu University. In 2011, student leaders were very angry. Protests went on for a month in the Kashi Hindu University campus with the aim of restoring the student union. The echo of the demonstration had also reached the central government.

In 2017, the entire campus was outraged after the molestation of a female college student of Banaras Hindu University. The students had expressed their displeasure against the Chief Proctor as well as the Vice Chancellor. The demand of the students was that the Vice Chancellor should come forward and give clarification on the safety of girl students and other issues. During this period, there were many violent demonstrations in the campus. The matter got so serious that the Vice Chancellor had to resign from the post.
