Donald Trump loses defamation case ordered to pay Rs 692 crore to writer Jean Carroll

Donald Trump defamation case: On Friday, Manhattan Federal Court has given verdict against former US President Donald Trump in a case of sexual harassment and defamation. Trump is also a presidential candidate in 2024. According to the court order, Trump will give 83.3 million dollars (692 crores) to writer E. Jean Carroll as defamation compensation.

Carroll had demanded $10 million for defamation, but the court has ordered compensation much higher, amounting to $83.3 million. Trump, in his statement after the decision, described the decision as ridiculous and said that he would appeal against it.

According to a report, the jury reached its decision after deliberating and debating for about three hours. Trump was present in the court when the debate began, but walked out midway. When the verdict was read in the court, Trump was not there. The jury found that what Trump said about Carroll had tarnished his image.

Compensation order in these cases
The order also includes punitive damages of $65 million. The order includes $7.3 million in compensatory damages and $11 million for reputational repair. 77 year old Trump has expressed his unhappiness over the decision. Trump also denied that he had instructed anyone to harm Carroll through his statements.

According to a report, just minutes after lawyer Roberta Kaplan began her closing arguments in Manhattan federal court, Trump suddenly got up from his seat on the defense side and started walking out. During the closing arguments, when writer E. Jean Carroll’s lawyer urged the jury to award damages to his client, Donald Trump left the courtroom.

Judge took cognizance of Trump leaving the court
While leaving, Trump stopped for a moment to look at the packed courtroom and during this time the members of the intelligence department started following him. The former president’s sudden departure forced Judge Lewis A. Kaplan to intervene in the debate. Judge Lewis A. Kaplan said- It will be shown in the record that Trump got up and walked out of the court.
