United States Border: US President-elect Donald Trump announced late on Sunday (November 10) that he is bringing back hardline immigration officer Tom Homan to monitor the country’s borders in the incoming administration. The Republican veteran has pledged to launch the largest deportation campaign of illegal immigrants in American history from the very first day of his presidency.
Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social, “I am pleased to announce that former ICE Director and Border Control veteran Tom Homan will be joining the Trump Administration and manning our nation’s borders. I’ve been looking forward to Tom a lot.” And there is no one better than him in policing and controlling our borders.”
Trump said Homan would be in charge of “deporting all illegal aliens back to their countries of origin.” He also said Homan’s duties will include overseeing the borders with Mexico and Canada, as well as the US coastline and airspace.
Who is Tom Homan?
In the second week of his term in office in 2017, Trump appointed Homan as acting director of ICE. In November that year, Trump nominated him to be the permanent director of ICE, but the Senate never acted on his nomination.
Homan played a key role in designing and implementing Trump’s family separation policy, which allowed children who crossed the southern border without legal permission to enter the United States to be separated from their parents or other adults. Criminal prosecution can be initiated against those people.
This policy, sometimes referred to as “zero tolerance”, began in 2017 and was expanded in early 2018, but the administration withdrew it after a large number of Americans called it inhumane. Took it back.
