A revolutionary study has confirmed this, opening up new ways of understanding how chickens feel and how to better relate to them. Like many animals, chickens experience emotions ranging from happiness and excitement to despair and fear. Their way of expressing these emotions is different from ours. They don’t rely on facial expressions like smiling or frowning to convey how they feel.
Instead, changes in chickens’ facial color provide clues about their internal state. The skin around their face is especially sensitive. These areas maintain a light red color when the hens are rested and content.

Researchers at France’s National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE) conducted an in-depth investigation to understand how a chicken’s redness reveals its emotions. They focused on Sussex chickens, a popular breed of egg-laying chickens.
To ensure accuracy, the research team used advanced camera technology and specialized software. This allowed them to accurately measure and analyze subtle changes in facial redness and achieve these surprising results. This study has been published in the Journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science.
