Permission for the mayor election was received from the Election Commission of India on Wednesday evening, but the presiding officer has not been nominated by the LG yet. In such a situation, it will be clear by Thursday evening whether the mayor’s election will be held on Friday or not.

According to Section 36-A of the DMC Act, the responsibilities will remain with the old mayor until the next mayor assumes office. The functioning of the corporation will continue as before. No meeting of the House will be held until the election of the new Mayor. In any case, there is a provision to hold mayor’s election in the first meeting of the first month of the new financial year itself. If the mayor’s election is not held on April 26, it will be a violation of the DMC Act.

The situation will be clear by 5 pm today

The Corporation Secretary’s office has informed that they are fully prepared to conduct the elections, but no instructions have come from the LG office yet. By 5 pm on Thursday it will be clear whether the mayor’s election will be held on Friday or not.

It is being said that the reason behind LG not nominating the presiding officer till now is that the file related to this which has been sent to LG has not been signed by CM Kejriwal.
