Chabahar Port big agreement between India and Iran India will take control of Chabahar Port for 10 years

India Chabahar Port: A big agreement is going to be signed between Iran and India today, India’s Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is reaching Tehran today regarding this deal. In Tehran, Indian ministers will sign an MoU regarding Chabahar Port, after which India will have control over Chabahar Port for 10 years. This move is being seen as a geopolitical outreach for India in Iran and Central Asia. According to Konomic Times, this will be the first time that India will take over the management of a port on foreign soil. India’s connectivity in the Eurasian region including Iran and Central Asia will be strengthened through Chabahar Port.

Chabahar Port will help India to counter Pakistan’s Gwadar Port and China’s Belt and Road Project. Through Chabahar Port, India will be able to bypass Pakistan to reach Afghanistan and Central Asia. There is a plan to connect Chabahar Port with the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC) in the coming time, through which India will be able to get direct access to St. Petersburg of Russia.

Chabahar Port PA Modi’s ambitious project
Chabahar project is seen as an ambitious project of PM Modi. Prime Minister in the year 2016 Narendra Modi During his visit to Iran, an agreement was reached to develop Chabahar Port. After this, in the year 2018, when the then President of Iran Hassan Rouhani came to New Delhi, there was a big discussion on India’s role on Chabahar port. At the same time, during the visit of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to Tehran in 2014, the issue of Chabahar Port was raised prominently.

India gets rights on Shahid Beheshti Terminal
The new agreement between India and Iran will be valid for 10 years and will be extended automatically. Under the original agreement regarding Chabahar, India has got rights only on the Shahid Beheshti terminal of the port. Afghanistan is also a stakeholder in this port. In 2016, India signed a trilateral agreement with Iran and Afghanistan to develop the Shahid Beheshti Terminal.

Taliban will invest in Chabahar Port
Taliban is also showing great interest in Chabahar Port. After the return of Taliban to Kabul, 50 percent of Afghanistan’s trade is happening through Chabahar Port. Recently Taliban had said that it wants to do most of its trade through Chabahar. The Taliban has also talked about an investment of $35 million for the construction of Chabahar port.
