BSNL Launches Direct-to-Device Satellite Connectivity Service, Remote Areas Will Get More Benefit

Government telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Wednesday launched direct-to-device satellite connectivity service. This will solve the problem of connectivity in remote areas. This service was introduced by the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) last month.

Recently, some smartphone companies have also provided the feature of satellite connectivity in their devices. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued a ban on social media platform Post BSNL has announced the launch of direct-to-device satellite connectivity service. With this service, mobile devices like smartphones can be connected through satellite network. It does not require mobile network. BSNL had successfully trialled D2D service in partnership with Viasat.

With this, users will be able to make audio and video calls between devices without a SIM card. Big telecom companies like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are also developing services related to satellite connectivity. During IMC, Viasat demonstrated the ability to send and receive messages to its L-band geostationary satellite up to 36,000 kilometers away. However, not much information has been given by BSNL about this service.

The company has also prepared to enter the low price mobile segment. has partnered with Karbonn Mobiles to introduce an exclusive SIM handset bundling offer. These handsets will compete with Jio Bharat 4G feature phones. With this, users will not need to buy expensive smartphones to use the company’s 4G services. Along with this, BSNL has also started testing 5G network. The company aims to launch one lakh 4G sites by the end of the current financial year. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio 5G network is present in large parts of the country. The central government plans to bring BSNL into profit soon. BSNL’s 5G network is being tested in collaboration with the Center for Development of Telecommunications (C-DoT). C-DoT itself has provided the network core for 4G. This core can also be used for 5G. However, this will require some upgrades.
