The BRICS countries on Monday expressed grave concern over the unprecedented escalation of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip and reaffirmed their support for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.

A meeting was held in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. India was represented at this meeting by Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs. At the meeting, the BRICS foreign ministers reiterated the group’s unwavering commitment to the two-state solution approach to the Palestine issue based on international law.

In a joint statement issued at the end of the meeting, the ministers expressed grave concern at the deterioration of the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory. The unprecedented escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip as a result of the Israeli military operation has led to casualties, massive civilian displacement and deaths.

During the meeting, the group also called for the immediate, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip, as well as the effective implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2728 calling for a ceasefire. The foreign ministers equally called for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and civilians who are being illegally detained.

The foreign ministers also reaffirmed their rejection of any attempt to forcibly displace, expel or relocate the Palestinian people from their land. Apart from this, the ministers expressed grave concern over Israel’s continued blatant disregard for international law, the UN Charter, UN resolutions and court orders.

More than 35,000 people killed in Gaza in Israeli attack
