New Delhi. Before the mega auction of Indian Premier League 2025, all the franchise teams have to prepare the list of their retained players. Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has decided to make a big sacrifice in the interest of the team. He has accepted a cut in his salary. He will be the second player to be retained by this IPL franchise before the deadline of October 31.
Gill will lead the Titans for the first time in 2024 and the team management is keen to retain the key players of both the teams. The first player to be retained for the franchise will be star spinner Rashid Khan, after this the team can retain Gill, Sai Sudarshan and two uncapped (who have not played any international match) players Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan.
In the big auction to be held next month, the franchise will have the opportunity to retain one more player through the Right to Match card. Gill is seen as a future leader in the Indian cricket set-up. An IPL source said, “Gill has decided to accept the pay cut so that the team can retain its key players and build a stronger team.”
Gill may suffer a loss of crores
According to the IPL retention guidelines issued before the big auction, the team got an increase of Rs 120 crore by retaining the first player. Out of this amount, there will be a loss of Rs 18 crores, Rs 14 crores will be deducted by retaining the second and Rs 11 crores will be deducted by retaining the third. For uncapped players, the team will have to spend Rs 4 crore each. Rashid Khan will be the first player to be retained while Gill will be the second, in such a situation he will be given Rs 14 crore instead of Rs 18 crore and due to this there may be a loss of Rs 4 crore in his current salary.
If a team retains five players playing international cricket, then Rs 75 crore will be deducted from its money in the auction. The auction is likely to be held abroad in the last week of November. This time the team will have Rs 120 crore to spend compared to Rs 100 crore received in last year’s auction. Any team can retain six players from the current team through retention and right to match card, which is the highest in the history of IPL.
