Bhagalpur Bihar Bridge Incident: Bridge collapses in seconds

A 1,710 crore underconstruction bridge destroyed in seconds in Bihar.The state government of Bihar and the opposition Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) are arguing because of the collapse of a bridge under construction in Bihar’s Bhagalpur.

The Bihar the government informed the press shortly after the four-lane bridge collapsed like a sand castle on the evening of May 4 that the building had “serious defects” and that some of its components had been destroyed purposefully.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered an investigation into the bridge collapsing incident, as he did last when pillars 4, 5, and 6 had fallen. The reason behind the 2022 incident was stated as the loose cable stand. Some people blamed the state for using poor construction materials.

On February 23, 2014, Nitish Kumar set the bridge’s cornerstone. It was expected to cost Rs 1,710 crore and be finished in March 2020. Deputy Chief Minister, Tejaswini Yadav, said at the press conference it might be recalled that on April 30 of, 2022, a section of the same bridge collapsed. Then they approached IIT-Roorkee, renowned for its knowledge of construction-related issues, to undertake research.

It has yet to produce a final report, but specialists who have examined the framework have already alerted us that significant flaws exist. Meanwhile, a guard at the construction site has gone missing, and rescue operations continue to find him. “A guard employed by SP Singla Company is reportedly missing following the bridge’s fall. Guard’s corpse has not yet been recovered. Teams from the NDRF and SDRF are actively looking for the guard,” Chandan Kumar, Circle Officer, told the media.

Moreover, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) President Bihar, Samrat Chaudhry, is demanding CM Nitish Kumar to resign as he had snapped ties with the saffron party in 2022. Another BJP leader from the state, Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, an ex-member of parliament, also released a statement accusing the incident of “corruption” and calling for a “high-level inquiry” into what happened. During the press conference, a government official said they decided not to take any chances and moved on with demolishing portions. According to reports, the bridge costs over 1,700 crore.

The state administration has called for an investigation into the events of Sunday and stated that the incompetent authorities should face harsh punishment.
