Android 15 to Unveiled Lock Screen Widgets With New Features Report Revealed

Android 15 is reportedly going to re-introduce the lock screen widget to smartphones. In the early days of Android, Google offered widgets on the lock screen. However, due to security reasons, this feature was removed with Android 5.0 update. Some reports this year suggested that the lock screen widget may be coming back, but only for tablets. However, now a new report has revealed that Google may be testing a feature that can also work on phones.

Android Authority of Mishal Rehman According to a report quoted by Reuters, Android 15 will support lock screen widgets for tablets, but they will not work as before. These widgets will not be visible directly on the lock screen. Instead, they can be added to a separate space that can be swiped up from the top of the lock screen. Mishal Rehman believes that due to lack of space, this feature has not been planned for the smartphone. But the tipster found some information in Android 15 beta 1.2 that suggests Google plans to add lock screen widget support.

Allegedly Google Testing moving our widget to the bottom of the screen. Let us tell you that Pixel is a widget like element for smartphones. This feature is also available for other smartphones running Android except widget design. However, most of the brands have not used this feature. Instead, companies rely on app makers to include persistent notifications to provide such experiences.

Rahman emphasized that Positions shows live activity on iOS. There may also be a way for Google to add third party app support. As the tipster points out, widgets are built on the RemoteView API and SmartSpaces is built on the API. If the tech giant builds support for the RemoteView API inside the Smartspace API, it could effectively allow third-party apps to display their widgets on the lock screen.

Android developers must work with app developers to ensure that widgets conform to the specification restrictions of the Smartspace API. Apart from this, they also have to monitor that these widgets do not add any element that can crash at a glance. For these reasons, it is unlikely that Google would do anything like this. Instead, a simpler option might be to modify persistent notifications and add user controls to make them lock screen widgets.
