The Madras High Court on Friday asked the Tamil Nadu government to remove caste/community names from all government schools in the state. The High Court has directed the Chief Secretary to initiate appropriate action in this regard.

A division bench of Justices SM Subramanian and C Kumarappan was passing further interim orders on suo motu proceedings initiated following the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy in which about 65 people lost their lives. The bench said that it has been brought to its notice that government schools were running in the name of ‘Government Tribal Residential School’ in that area (Kalvarayan Hills). The use of the word ‘tribal’ in the name of the government school was improper. Such use in the name of a school would undoubtedly stigmatise the children studying there.
They will have a feeling that they are studying in a ‘tribal school’ and not in an institution at par with other children in the surrounding areas, the bench said. Stigmatising children should not be allowed by the courts and the government under any circumstances.
