UN relief agency declared a terrorist organization in Israel

The Israeli parliament gave preliminary approval on Monday to a bill to declare the key UN agency that provides relief to Palestinians a terrorist organisation, a move that would see Israel sever ties with the body.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is working prominently for Palestinian refugees. UNRWA provides education, health and assistance to millions of Palestinians in Gaza, West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Israeli leaders have accused it of collaborating with Hamas in Gaza. The vote against it is considered to be Israel’s latest step to put pressure against the agency.

The Knesset Information Service said the bill would be sent to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for further deliberations. The bill was introduced by Israeli lawmaker Yisrael Beitenu. It has long had tense relations with Israel but relations have deteriorated sharply since the war in Gaza began and Israel has repeatedly called for the disbanding of UNRWA.
