New Delhi. There is a good demand for the foreign fruit Kiwi in the country. But the good news is that Nagaland is doing kiwi gardening. And what is even more pleasing is that the production of kiwi is increasing. In view of this, the Central Government has started helping Nagaland to get the status of Kiwi State. An initiative has been started to increase the production of kiwi and also to get a bigger market for it. Although other states of the North-East are also producing kiwi, but they are far behind Nagaland. Traders say that an income of 24 lakhs can be earned from one hectare of orchard. Only 8.9 lakhs can be earned by planting an apple orchard in one hectare, while only 2 to 2.5 lakhs can be earned from vegetable production, mainly tomatoes. Kiwi is also known as Chinese gooseberry. Although the origin of this fruit is China, it was used commercially by New Zealand. In Himachal Pradesh, many gardens were planted in the 1990s in Kullu, Mandi, Solan, Chamba and Sirmaur districts, but due to lack of technical knowledge, kiwi fruit gardening did not prove to be as profitable as its potential. The main reason for this was the low size and quality of the fruits, which were less than the fruits imported from abroad.

Marketing of kiwi in markets across the country-On this occasion, Union Minister of State for Agriculture Parshottam Rupala said that today farmers of Nagaland are marketing kiwi with traders of big cities of the country, this is a good sign. He said that producing foreign fruits here and reducing their import is also a step in the direction of the self-reliant India campaign. He also stressed on forming a separate farmer producer organization in Nagaland for kiwi fruit.
