New Delhi. The effect of Corona-lockdown was seen later on the market, but the price of cardamom had started increasing even before that. The price of cardamom which started increasing in January 2020 had reached Rs 7 thousand per kg by the time of unlock. Due to the increase in the rate, Saudi Arabia, the biggest customer of Indian cardamom, also reduced the purchase of cardamom. The tea and paan vendors on the street also stopped using cardamom. But now once again cardamom has come down to its old rate.

Now cardamom is being sold for 2 to 3 thousand rupees per kg

According to the wholesale traders of Khari Baoli, the price of good quality cardamom had reached Rs 7,000 per kg. The increase in the rate also affected the export. The demand for cardamom in the Indian market also decreased. Although cardamom was also available in the market at Rs 5,000 per kg, the demand was neither for cheap nor for good quality cardamom. But with the arrival of goods, the price of cardamom has started falling. The price of cardamom had started falling a few days before Diwali. Today, cardamom is being sold in the market for Rs 2 to Rs 3 thousand per kg.

According to experts, in 2019-20, many states in the South faced drought due to less rainfall, while in some places, there was more rain than required. This had a direct impact on cardamom cultivation. Due to which the export demand was not met and the local market also could not get cardamom and the rates kept increasing. Before the fluctuations in rainfall, 30 to 40 tonnes of cardamom was coming to the market every day. But the impact of the weather weakened this demand.
