Construction work in the name of development often proves harmful for the environment. But concern for the environment also creates problems. Sometimes, in the process of saving lives, some works become expensive. A strange incident happened when before demolishing a theatre, the need arose to remove a nest built on its roof. The bird did not let the workers remove the nest. This delayed the work so much that the city council lost crores of rupees which became a burden on the pockets of the people.

A seagull caused damage worth ₹49,748,000 to locals after it failed to leave its nest on top of a theatre being demolished in the Welsh city’s Newport Centre. It was later safely demolished, but work had to be halted before the seagull was spotted.

And it took 40 days for the seagulls and their chicks to leave before work could begin – adding significantly to the cost of demolishing the building. Newport City Council says more than £460,000 was spent on the demolition project last year.

The council said the delay was due to “delays caused by nesting seagulls and the additional costs incurred as a result of the construction agreement, which were ultimately paid for by the council from local people’s taxes”.

The council said 40 days were lost because of the nesting bird. Demolition of the Newport Centre has now been completed so it can be replaced with a new campus for Coleg Gwent College. It is stipulated in the contract before construction that who will be responsible for any delays or costs associated with the work.

Newport Centre has welcomed many big names in music, including stars such as David Bowie and Elton John who performed concerts at the venue. A new entertainment venue is to be built on the other side of the River Usk in the city.
