New Delhi. We know the stories of Tata, Ambani, Birla, but leaving the lure of jobs in multinational companies, the idea of teaching online only took the valuation of a company of two lakh rupees to about 90 thousand crores. This is the story of India’s second largest startup online learning app Byju’s and its founder Byju Ravindran. In a conversation with News18, he told how the idea of bringing education on an online platform achieved such a huge success. Not only this, in the Corona period when all schools, coaching and colleges are closed, how is the Byju app teaching students…
Know the story of Byju’s from Ravindran himself…
“My friends were preparing for competitive exams. They wanted to study from me, so I guided them. They liked my method and they cracked the exam. On their insistence, we tried this idea in a workshop of 100 students. Later, we also conducted a session for 20,000 students simultaneously in the stadium. During this time, I found that there was a huge difference in the way students learn. They were just cramming because of the fear of exams. So we got the idea to develop a love for learning in them through the use of technology. Keeping this in mind, we formed Think and Learn Private Limited in 2011. Then in August 2015, we launched the Byju app. Today we have four crore subscribers, out of which 28 lakh are paid subscribers.
Now let me tell you about my team. When we were in the initial stage, my students helped me expand my classes. These students later formed the core team of the company and this team is now running all the important functions of the company from content development, sales and marketing. The Byju’s team has only one passion, that is to instill the habit of learning in our students. This passion can be seen from top to bottom in the company.
I am an engineer by profession, an entrepreneur by chance and a teacher by choice. I never planned to start my work as a business. I just followed my passion and invested my strength to make it happen. Later it became a business. No business can be run with the passion to earn money, but the passion to change society is much more important. I think that The real fun here is not in building a billion dollar company, but in building a billion thinkers and learners.
By the way, I want to tell you that I had not done any business. That is why I and my team learn by doing. We learned everything from business model to its expansion and raising funds. Anyway, since we do the work of teaching, then we also learn and do entrepreneurship ourselves.
These days I don’t get as much time to teach as I used to, but I am happy that many of my students are doing better than me today. We have teachers who are better than me today. Teaching is one of the most creative and powerful jobs. Teachers have a lifelong impact on children, from helping shape their minds to giving them a launch pad for their ideas and imaginations.
I want to tell my young colleagues that when you do what you love and are passionate about, you are self-motivated. You need to think big, aspire high, plan and execute fast. If you are passionate about your idea then work hard right from the beginning.”
