West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday filed an appeal before a division bench of the Calcutta High Court challenging the order of a single bench which restrained her and three others from making any defamatory or false statement against Governor CV Anand Bose. The single bench of the High Court had passed this interim order on Tuesday on the defamation suit filed by the Governor.

Banerjee had made certain remarks while speaking on the controversy related to the swearing-in of two newly elected Trinamool Congress MLAs, against which Bose has filed a suit. Banerjee challenged the single bench order, which is till August 14.

In its order, the court has also restrained Banerjee and three others – newly elected MLAs Sayantika Banerjee and Rayat Hussain Sarkar and Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh – from making any derogatory or false statement against Bose. It will now be listed for hearing before a division bench.

According to a Raj Bhavan source, the governor accused Banerjee of “wasting public money by appointing exorbitantly charged lawyers” in the case. The source said Bose will continue his fight against “government corruption”.
