Relations between India and Canada are tense. Meanwhile, the top leaders of both countries met at the G7 summit. After the meeting, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that many important issues were discussed in the meeting with Prime Minister Modi and both countries expressed commitment to work together. First meeting after the relationship became strained
This is the first meeting between PM Modi and Justin Trudeau amid strained diplomatic relations over Khalistani extremists. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Trudeau said, “I will not go into the details of this important and sensitive issue on which we need to work further, but we expressed our commitment to work together on important issues in the future.” The two leaders had earlier met during the G20 summit in India. During the meeting, Trudeau congratulated Prime Minister Modi on being elected as Prime Minister for the third time.
Relations between the two countries deteriorated after Nijjar’s assassination
Last year, a Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead in Canada. The Canadian Prime Minister blamed India for this, but India rejected these allegations outright and called them absurd. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police of Canada is investigating this case. Four Indian citizens have been arrested in this case. India has complained to Canada several times for not taking action against Khalistani extremists operating from Canadian soil.
