PM Modi raised the issue of strict action against fugitives like Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya with British PM Keir Starmer. Apart from this, cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, technological innovation, and green economy was also discussed. During this, PM Modi stressed the need to speed up the extradition cases of India and Britain.
Nirav Modi accused in PNB scam
PNB scam is one of the biggest scams in Indian banking history. From where Nirav Modi committed a fraud of 2 billion dollars and escaped to Britain. In March 2018, news was received about Nirav that he was in Britain. He has applied for political asylum there. But the Indian government is trying to extradite him. In June 2019, Swiss authorities froze his assets and bank accounts, worth a total of $6 million, in the fraud case.
Vijay Mallya ‘willful defaulter’ case
Vijay Mallya is accused of failing to repay huge loans taken from Indian banks. Mallya was found guilty of contempt of court in 2017 for transferring $40 million to his children. For this, in July 2022, the Supreme Court sentenced Mallya to four months in jail and a fine.
