India’s decision not to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025 has left the neighboring country fuming. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is angry with this decision and the officials have made it clear that they are not ready for any ‘hybrid’ solution to this problem. Meanwhile, a Pakistani journalist raised the issue of India’s denial during the daily press briefing of the US State Department, a question which was asked by Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel who was surprised by the question. However, he gave a befitting reply to the Pakistani journalist. Its video is going viral on social media.

The Pakistani journalist asked, ‘There is going to be a big cricket tournament in Pakistan.’ On this Vedant said- ‘Cricket? Oh, this is not in my scope nor is there anything written about the conversation regarding this. Ask further.’ After this the Pakistani journalist says- ‘This is the biggest ICC tournament after the Cricket World Cup and India was ready to participate, but the Indian government has refused to send the team to Pakistan. The Indian team last toured Pakistan in 2008, but due to political tension India has not toured there. Do you think mixing politics with sports is a good idea? What is your opinion on this?’

However, Vedant Patel clarified that the issue is entirely between India and Pakistan as the US is not taking any stand on the issue related to the Champions Trophy. He said, ‘As this matter pertains to relations between India and Pakistan, it is up to them to resolve it, be it through sports or other matters. I leave it to him to talk about our bilateral relations. ‘It’s nothing for us to get involved in, but sport is undoubtedly a powerful and unifying force.’ The Pakistani journalist was surprised to hear this answer.

Earlier, ICC has made changes in the tour schedule of Champions Trophy to be held next year. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had objected to the Trophy Tour being held in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK), after which the global body of cricket has released a revised schedule which does not include POK. The Trophy Tour will now pass through Karachi, Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region. India has already told ICC about not going to Pakistan for this tournament and the same information has also been conveyed to PCB. In such a situation, ICC is also considering holding the tournament in some other country. Pakistan has already refused the hybrid model, in which India would play its matches in another country and the remaining matches would be played in Pakistan.
