New Delhi. England’s opening batsman David Malan feels that today’s World Cup match against Pakistan could be his last ODI. Defending champion England is already out of the race for the semi-finals and the match to be held at Eden Gardens will be their last match in this World Cup. After this, the possibility of a radical change in the team is being expressed. England’s performance in the World Cup 2023 has been very poor. So far the team has been able to win only 2 out of 8 matches, while it has lost 6. On the other hand, Pakistan has won 4 out of 8 matches. Even before the World Cup, South Africa’s Quinton de Kock and Afghanistan’s Naveen Ul Haq had announced their retirement from ODI cricket. During the tournament, England’s fast bowler David Willey had talked about his retirement from international cricket after the World Cup.
David Malan, while talking to the media before the match against Pakistan, said, being the second oldest player of the team, I feel that I am in a strange situation. I don’t know what my future will be and whether it will be by my choice or the team’s choice. So far, only Malan has been able to perform well among England’s batsmen. This left-handed batsman has so far scored 373 runs with the help of one century and 2 half-centuries.
David Malan said that after this tournament maybe I will have some time to think and then I will see what position I am in and what the future holds for me. He said that this could be my last match for England against Pakistan and it could also be the beginning of a new journey. Who knows.
