Angelo Mathews was timed out in the match against Bangladesh in the ODI World Cup 2023. He became the first player to be dismissed in this manner in international cricket. Mathews was very angry after being out like this and even after the match he expressed his disappointment. After this a debate broke out in the cricket world. Many people believed that whatever Shakib did, he did it within the limits of the rules. At the same time, many people said that Mathews’ helmet had malfunctioned, this can happen to any player. In such a situation, Bangladesh should not have appealed against him.

Mathews reached the crease at the scheduled time as per ICC rules, but while he was adjusting his helmet before facing the first ball, its strap came off. Instead of seeking permission from the umpire, he went to the dugout and signaled for a spare helmet. According to the rules, the batsman should be ready to face the first ball within two minutes, but Mathews could not do so. In such a situation, on Shakib’s appeal, the umpire asked him to leave the field without playing any ball.

Speaking on his YouTube channel on Friday, Ashwin spoke on this time out. He told that he had seen a video on social media in which Shakib had forgotten to bring his guard in the match against Sri Lanka and he was allowed to ask for it. None of the opposition teams appealed for time out. Ashwin, however, admitted that Mathews was justified in being disappointed, but the Bangladesh captain had every right to appeal the dismissal.

Ashwin said “One side is talking about the rules and the other side is talking about the spirit of cricket. When Mathews came to bat, his helmet was not right and he wanted to change it. I made another Saw the video where Shakib did not bring his guard against Sri Lanka and he was later allowed to bring it. It has almost become like a war between these two countries.”

Ashwin further said “Shakib appealed and the umpire gave it out, I agree with that. Recently, there were reports that Mathews was already warned by the umpires about the time-out. But Mathews Really upset that he got out, and rightfully so. Nobody should have to be like this, everyone will feel bad about it.”

Ashwin later revealed that he himself was made aware of the time-out by the on-field umpire during the Nagpur Test match against Australia earlier this year, when he came in as the nightwatchman in the opening innings. Were strolling in the field to destroy.

He said “I wanted to go slowly so that it would be the last over and stumps would be called. But then the umpire said to me, ‘You came to the crease a little late. Do you know if they had appealed I would have Would have given out. I was really shocked” he said because he was of the opinion that many teams are still not aware of this rule.
