Pakistan General Elections: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) told the Supreme Court on Thursday that general elections in the country will be held on February 11, 2024. In such a situation, the uncertainty that had been going on for months over the elections ended.
Pakistan Election Commission lawyer Sajeel Swati said that the process of determining constituencies has started. This work will be completed by January 29, which will pave the way for the elections. He said this when the apex court resumed hearing on petitions seeking holding of elections within 90 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly and provincial assemblies.

Final list will be published on 5th December
A three-judge bench of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faiz Isa, Justice Amin-ud-din Khan and Justice Athar Minallah heard the petitions filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), PTI, Munir Ahmed and Ibad. During today’s hearing, CJP sought a clear stand from the Election Commission on the elections, to which ECP lawyer Sajeel Swati said that the process of determining constituencies will be completed by January 29, paving the way for the elections. He said that the final list of constituencies will be published on December 5.
Election Commission chose Sunday
Sajeel Swati told the court that the Election Commission is considering holding voting on Sunday for the convenience of the public. “So we decided that the elections will be held on February 11, which is the second Sunday,” he said. During the hearing, CJP Isa asked the Election Commission whether President Arif Alvi was taken on board in this matter, to which Swati said, “We are not bound to take the President on board”
CJP angry at Election Commission
According to Dawn report, the Chief Justice got angry at Sajeel Swati’s reply. He said, “Both the President and the ECP are Pakistanis. Why is the ECP hesitating to consult the President?” He then directed the election body to discuss the matter with Alvi today.
